The countdown has begun and we all are geared up to welcome 2018. Amidst all the excitement of the coming year, we took time to look back how the year 2017 has been for Lucknow; and trust us it reminded us how it has been a year ‘full of surprises’.

Let’s check out top 10 things that happened in Lucknow in the year gone by.

1. Karte Hai Hum Pyaar ‘Mr. India’ se!

2017 seized with great news for Lucknowites. Jitesh Singh Deo, from Lucknow, won the title of Mr. India World 2017 and we definitely are proud.

2. The much-awaited Metro Train flagged off in Lucknow

One of the most ambitious projects of UP government, Lucknow Metro finally started for the common public in September 2017. The 8.5 km long ‘Priority Corridor’ from Transport Nagar to Charbagh, is now operational from 6 am to 10 pm every day.

3. BJP stormed back to power in Uttar Pradesh after 15 years

In a landslide victory, BJP stormed back to power in Uttar Pradesh after 15 years; breaking all the stereotypes associated with UP elections. The year also witnessed Yogi Adityanath being appointed as Chief Minister of UP. The political wave in Lucknow took a U-Turn.

4. Lucknow got its first ever Women Mayor

2017 saw a paradigm shift in Lucknow’s local body elections and Sanyunka Bhatia from BJP become first ever Women Mayor in Lucknow.

5. The infamous Beef Ban & shutdown of Tundey Kebabi

 

With Yogi BJP over UP, the state witnessed a crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses. The Beef Ban led to a scarcity of meat supply resulting into the world famous Tundey Kebabi shutting their outlet. However, Lucknowites were not really pleased!

6. Ekana Cricket Stadium

Lucknow is all set to host international cricket tournaments as the year 2017 witnessed the establishment of Ekana Cricket Stadium – an international cricket stadium in the city. Equipped with the latest technology, Ekana is the second largest cricket stadium in India.

7. Lucknow witnessed its first LGBT Community Pride Parade

Lucknow witnessed its first ever LGBT Community Pride Parade on April 09, 2017. A huge number of people from LGBT community participated in the parade. This certainly came as a wave of liberal thoughts in Lucknowites and acceptance of Human Rights.

8. Petrol Pump Scam got discovered

The Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh Police revealed that several petrol pumps in Lucknow (also in other parts of Uttar Pradesh) were allegedly using an electronic chip in their fuel dispensing machines to cheat consumers by providing them less fuel than what they were paying for. This definitely left us in shock.

9. Global hotel chains made a way to Lucknow

The year 2017 saw Lucknow emerging as a hot destination for international hotel and hospitality chains. During the year 2017, top hotel chains like the US-based Hilton, Radisson, Ramada, and AccorHotels (Novotel) launched their maiden properties in the ‘City of Nawabs’.

10. Biometric Attendance for UP ministers & government employees

For ministers and government employees in UP, it will be a throwback to their school days; as biometric attendance system is being introduced to discipline the ministers/employees who are not sticking to office timings. Well, that’s a new thing for laid back people of UP.
